WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?

A heat pump is an energy-efficient heat source that uses energy from the ambient air or ground outside a property for heating and hot water.

By using this energy and transferring the heat into the house through a wet system, such as underfloor heating or radiators, a heat pump requires less power input and is, therefore, more efficient than conventional boilers.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A heat pump is, essentially, a big fridge or freezer.

If we look at how a fridge or freezer works in detail, it uses a refrigerant inside the pipework to suck the heat out from your food. The compressor or refrigerant pump moves the refrigerant around the system so that it can collect the heat and dispose of it using a coil on the back of a fridge. A freezer uses the heat in your food to heat the kitchen so, in essence, is a food to kitchen heat pump.

For every 1 kWh of energy input, a heat pump can deliver more than 5 kWh in thermal energy output. This is an energy efficiency ratio of more than 500%; which is far superior to high energy efficiency boiler systems. Since conventional boilers can only reach an efficiency ratio of up to 95%, they consume more energy than they can ever deliver.

HOW DOES IT DIFFER TO A FOSSIL FUEL BOILER?

The installation of an air source heat pump is almost identical to that of a heat-only fossil fuel boiler.

The two big differences are "the boiler" sits outside and a low loss header or buffer tank is used for the heating circuit.

Room thermostats, expansion vessels etc. will be similar to a fossil fuel boiler. The difference here will be in pipe sizing which will be 28mm, so valves and circulation pumps will need to be sized accordingly.

WHO CAN FIT A HEAT PUMP?

Essentially, anyone. There is no legal minimum level of qualification required to be able to install a heat pump.

With that said, we would highly recommend that an installer is qualified to NVQ Level 2 in Heating & Plumbing.

In order for consumers to receive almost all incentives/grants, the installer would have to be MCS accredited and possibly Trustmark certified, among other things.

WHAT GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE?

The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Domestic RHI) is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat.

People who join the scheme and stick to its rules receive quarterly payments for seven years for the amount of clean, renewable heat their system is estimated to produce.

The current tariff level for air source heat pumps in 10.85p / kWh and for ground source it's 20p / kWh. The amount paid under the scheme can be up to around £11,000 over a 7-year period.

The Clean Heat Grant has been proposed to take over from where the Domestic RHI leaves off in March 2022. The intention is that the scheme will run from April 2022 until March 2024, providing a means of assisting homeowners with meeting the cost of installing low carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps.

Full details haven't been released yet, but it's expected that the grant will be a straightforward £4,000 voucher.
